Look at that! A finished drama in the big year, 2026. I’m shocked at myself, too. But honestly, the only reason I finished this in a somewhat reasonable time was that Netflix allows you to speed this up. (Get on it, Viki!) I don’t say that because the drama was bad. It was surprisingly okay. The pacing for me just seemed to drag in places where it didn’t really need to. There were interesting points, the chemistry wasn’t horrible, and the music was good.
Let’s talk premise. Sena, a defense attorney who is secretly a longtime fangirl of a K-Rock group, Gold Boys. Life is just lifing when one day a member of the quartet is murdered and the main vocalist, Do Ra Ik, who is also Sena’s bias, is the main suspect. So, of course, she must represent him. That is basically the whole gist of the plot. It was giving Suspicious Partner vibes with Raik ending up staying with Sena for some time. The murder mystery had a bunch of suspects throughout the story. I went from thinking it was the disgruntled drummer to thinking it was the company’s CEO. But I would like to say my first murderer assumption turned out to be the right one!
Alongside the mystery plot, they had the romance. When I say the chemistry was okay, I mean more in the sense that the kisses were A1. When it came to them as a couple, I liked the idea, but the execution felt a little flat. I felt like Sooyoung was so focused on making Sena this uptight lawyer that she didn’t allow for anything else to fit in. She played fangirl well, and then there was her professional side, but there wasn’t any bridge between them. Most of the time, Sena just seemed awkward for way too long. Jae Yeong, on the other hand, was giving me levels. He was charismatic and also tortured as Raik. He was like a kicked wet cat that you just wanted to nurture. His backstory felt very layered, and Jae Yeong did a good job at conveying that. He definitely carried the romantic aspect of their dynamic; however, I had a hard time believing it. Yes, Sena and Raik were the Fan/Idol dynamic, but it just made no sense why they would be together. But, alas, I shipped it.
Honestly, if you took Her Private Life, Suspicious Partner, Lovely Runner, and So I Married an Anti-Fan into a blender, this would be the smoothie that came out. A little chunky in places, sweet and tart, but all drinkable.
