LABEL: JYP Entertainment
RELEASED: March 5, 2019
When it was announced that there was going to be another (or first depends on your views of JJ Project) sub-unit to come out of GOT7, I was hype. The teasers started coming and the moment I saw Yugyeom’s head, I prayed that it would be JB announced as his partner. Described as “GOT7 main vocals + main dancer = fantasy combination”, Jus2 promised a different, darker, more sexier vibe than GOT7’s recent releases. With previous soundcloud releases from both JB aka DEF SOUL and Yugyeom, I anticipated songs leaning more into the R&B realm of things. Maybe I was satisfied or disappointed, lets focus on it.
FOCUS ON ME (Title Track) – With my bias put aside, when I heard the teaser for this song, I didn’t like it. The heavy synth beats felt overwhelming and I really didn’t find the melody all that appealing. That’s until I listened to the full track. And then again, and again, and again. JB and Yugyeom’s unique tones lend themselves to this track and really make you do as they say, focus on them. The groove is smooth and the song just makes you want to sit back with a drink and chill out. The video is artsy but fits well with the song. And the visuals suberb and choreography feels like it’s giving nods GOT7 but with their own flare.
DRUNK ON YOU – I think Jus2 just confessed to me with this track. Or maybe it makes me want to confess to them. Either way, favorite track off the EP. The beat is seductive as well as the vocals. The bit of sing rapping is sexy and makes me want to hear what they would do on a full rap verse.
TOUCH – This one would maybe be my second favorite track. Both guys show off where they’re comfortable vocally with a lot of falsettos. The beat feels like you’re riding a wave of highs and little lows. What carries this is clearly the vocals with a nice assist by the beats.
SENSES – A dance track with R&B grooves. Funny enough, I would put this in a neo-soul category. The beat feels very prominent and whereas in the other songs, the vocals shined through, they stayed really in one note. No real growth. I like to call this the little sister to Focus On Me.
LOVE TALK – Senses part 2, just faster.
LONG BLACK – A straight R&B track. This is the baby making beat that you expect off maybe a Chris Brown album, which I’m sure Yugyeom was happy about. Not as good as Drunk On You, but the groove is there and I liked it way better than the last two songs.
This feels like both JB and Yugyeom had their styles and what they excel at all over this project. I could see both of them having success in the R&B genre if they decide to ever venture out. But this was a great stepping stone for them.
