TITLE: DELIGHT
ARTIST: BAEKHYUN
LABEL: SM Entertainment
RELEASED: May 25, 2020
It’s been a while since we’ve done a post like this. Of course we had to for soloist of the year, Byun Baekhyun. Baekyun is satisfying our sweet tooth with 7 new hoe anthems. And it’s been 10 months since we became Betcha elitist with his debut release of City Lights. Will we have another pack of bangers on our hands or is Baekhyun a hit it and quit it man?
(Lazy Unnie will be colored pink and Sugar Baby Unnie will be purple.)
CANDY – TITLE TRACK
If I were to become a stripper in my post-covid career, this would be at the top of my playlist. It immediately makes my body want to do things it’s not used to. The synth beats plus Baekhyun’s melodic singing gives this song a groovy quality I’m loving. Listening to his bridge was like eating the sweetest of candies. Poprocks, Strawberry and Bubblegum to be precise. Now the MV. At first glance it gave me Jay Park All I Wanna Do vibes but that’s a complement because this didn’t need all the flash. Baekhyun’s visuals and that undercut are enough. It showed off Baekhyun’s dancing ability and definitely his more colorful charms. The song is him asking you to choose him. Based on this there is no question, I choose you Baekhyun-chu!
It’s a very straightforward song that could easily be any of the pop songs that you hear on the radio in America. It is a synth trap r&b song which is exactly the type of shit I eat up. The lazy flexing vibe is similar to Justin Bieber’s “Yummy” and I know that was the intention behind it. The last chorus after the bridge is easily my favorite part of the entire song. As for the music video, I just think it’s really unfair that Baekhyun is not spilling his seed in my guts.. Like excuse me sir? Why on earth does he look so damn fine? God really chooses favorites doesn’t he? I know that’s why he’s short. He had to be humbled. Byun Baekhyun you can be my candy all day every damn day. I finally understand why people become sisterwives.
R U RIDIN’?
The answer is yes! I am ridin Baekhyun! There is just something about his melodic voice layered over this chill trap beat. When it slows down in the prechorus and picks back up in the chorus, I’m living. The bridge didn’t give me the huge belting note I was expecting but the adlibs in the back distract me enough to not miss it.
You know he’s talking about his dick right? Listen, I will ride you Baekhyun baby.. Absolutely will..No questions asked. So this is also a very straightforward song with a chill trap beat. There are no surprises throughout the song. It’s just what you see is what you get. His melodies are good, but nothing really stands out.
BUNGEE
This is where we find out that the B in R&B is now for Baekhyun. It’s mid tempo and has Baek singing in that higher register that we love from him. The bridge slows it down and gives me the Baekhyun belt I was waiting for in R U Ridin’. Thank you vocal gods. A track that now has a clear place on my chill playlist.
This song reminds me of UN Village a lot. This is such a soft song with a sweet and melody vibe. The layering on the pre chorus is really soothing and his high note in the bridge is worth noting. I love the underlying piano in the instrumental as it allows the song to rest snuggly in “coffee shop music” territory.
UNDERWATER
This is the moment in the Baekhyun agenda when we reach the love making song. I’m starting to sense a theme with all these water references but where is he wrong? Baekhyun has the ability to make anyone feel a little damp with his vocals alone. The song is super dreamy and I find myself getting lost in it. By the end I’m like… ‘Where’s the rest?!’
Now listen to me… I am so emotional listening to this. It is so mesmerizing, His falsettos go straight down my spine. I love the reiterating of the doorknock throughout the song. This song is truly something magical. The lyrics perfectly capture the feeling of sinking deep underwater. Imagine listening to this high? Yeah.. That’s it.
POPPIN
You think this is Betcha part 2? Maybe or maybe not but either way I’m here for it. Hearing Baekhyun’s more lower and natural tone feels like it makes the lyrics hit harder and in a different way. I only got halfway through the song and I knew immediately that it was going to be an earworm with the hook of ‘Hey Now’. It is fun and up-tempo that makes it the perfect booty poppin treat. My only negative with it, is that it also ends abruptly. I feel like it could have gone on longer or wrapped up nicer.
A nice hip hop track that asks you to dance around. It has the same vibe as Betcha, although I do think that Betcha is the stronger of the two has it had better melodies and instrumental. Still, there’s nothing particularly amiss about this. I do enjoy the chorus as it sticks more than the rest of the song does. I do think it’s like a nice change of vibe after feeling like a sad hoe while listening to Underwater.
GHOST
The one where Baekhyun meets ‘different R&B’. This song isn’t what I was expecting. It feels very genre blending with Funk notes mixed with a little island flair with some of the drum beats. But then it has an air of rock in there. What doesn’t change is Baekhyun’s ability to sing his way into your hearts. Immediately without me looking up the lyrics, I know this is a different type of song than the others. There is a pain and longing that the others don’t have. And I appreciate it.
THIS. SONG. IS. EVERYTHING. Listen first of all baby, I would never ghost you baby. I love this alternative R&B sound. There is something about the synths and drums in this song that is just absolutely working for me. I immediately thought of Groove from Obsession album but in a more subdued form. Idk exactly what it is, but this song is absolutely hitting. The way I repeated it four times before I moved onto Love Again and then again after I finished Love Again. Yep. Yep.
LOVE AGAIN
I love Colde. I love Baekhyun. So why wouldn’t I love the collaboration of the two? The answer is obvious and I do love it. Probably the closest we will get to a ballad off the album with the wistful R&B track. The acoustic guitar layered over the more hip-hop beat makes me feel like this song would work as an acoustic version and this full one. Just like with Ghost, this song has a different vibe but Baekhyun’s sweet vocals convey that message of longing.
First of all, I would never have left you in the first place. This is a contemporary r&b song that Korea would eat all the way up. I am not surprised to see that it is charting so high. It has the vibe of driving around at night admiring the stars and thinking about your ex. Hehehe. It is very easy to listen to and I am really fond of the last 43 seconds of the song. It prevents it from being a forgettable track.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I just went on a love journey with Baehyun. He showed us his fun side with Candy and asking us to be his girlfriend to the end of the relationship with deeper more sorrow tones. Yes he’s our Dorky Mint but he can also just make you feel something. I honestly can go on and on about how amazing this mini is but I will say, lets stop with the minis. Give a full album. Baekhyun has already proven he can outsell anyone *coughs* EXO included *coughs*. Anyway, thank you for this summer ready tracks cause I will be blasting this until the next release. Lets get #Candy1stWin, kay? Kay.
Baekhyun didn’t disappoint at all. He’s the only man I trust and ever will. I am forever grateful that he is a kneegrow and will always serve me kneegrow music. I have officially forgiven the release with BB4 because he easily made up for it with this album. Also how DARE he name the album Delight with Sticky and Sweet version then all up in the MV looking like a snack and half and expect me not to want to get dicked down? Ugh. Please don’t go to the army.. You’re too sexy.
