The Unnies’ Spin on The Playlist: EXO – Don’t fight the feeling

TITLE: DON’T FIGHT THE FEELING

ARTIST: EXO

LABEL: SM Entertainment

RELEASED: JUNE 07, 2021

If there is one thing you know about the unnies is that we have a fire burning bright for EXO. It is hard to believe that the last time we got an album from them was back in 2019! Naturally, since Sugar Baby reviewed Obsession back in the day, it makes sense for the both of us to tackle Don’t Fight The Feeling together.

Don’t Fight The Feeling – Title Track

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

I admit, it’s hard not singing the Justin Timberlake song of the same title, however this stands up to that earworm. This song immediately gives me a vibe if Power and SuperM went to the club and this was playing. But main vocal D.O brings it back to planet EXO. I love how each member puts their own flavor and tone in this song and I’m addicted to Sehun’s rap verse. AND THEN YIXING! I almost give a pass to SM for the bad photoshopping they did putting him in the MV. They get a C+ for effort.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I always say how much I am disinterested in KPOP, but the truth is that I just miss EXO. Ugh this song starting off strong with Kyungsoo’s vocals and then Baekhyun? It was like they knew exactly what I wanted. It is a fun dance pop track that is perfect for the summer and to give a great vibe. I have to admit, I have seen youtube vidders do better manips that what they did for Yixing in the MV, but it still made me feel so happy and proud.

Parasdise

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The build up in this song is one of my favorites. And again, you can actually hear Lay’s lines and it just reminds me that OT9 is real. As for the song it’s a nice contemporary R&B Pop song and it makes sense that it was done by the boys from PrettyMuch because it reminds me of the song they did with NCT Dream but better.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

We always stan a good tropical house and smooth pop sound in this house! Listen, this song just hits different. I love the way the song starts with the very simple cords and the percussion of the pre-chorus. It’s giving vocals and flare that is dare I say… smooth like butter.

No Matter

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

This immediately reminds me of old school New Edition and it is probably sampled from them and I love that. EXO has a knack for taking old R&B sounds and making them their own. I love this song because it feels nostalgic and still current. It makes me wanna do a two-step for sure.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

EXO coming in once again with the vocals and high notes that sound impeccable on this pop funk song. It’s giving let’s chill and vibe out. Which I am here for 100%.

Runaway

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I’m obsessed. I can listen to this song on repeat and never tire. I am in love with how EXO’s vocals go so well with the hills and valleys in this track. The pre-chorus with just the guitar for song to go back to the heavy beat sound of the rest of the song doesn’t feel as repetitive as you would think. The melody really takes this song to another level. The runs in the chorus… 🙌🏽🙌🏽

Rating: 3 out of 5.

A very beautiful song with great harmonies and a nice sturdy bass. It is not surprising to me to see the producers on the track because it is giving very much Bazzi. I am not sure if this really stands tall amongst their discography in general, but the adlibs and runs are really pleasing.

Just As Usual

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

I think I really like this song because it reminds me of that vibe Zion T would put out there. That smooth Hip-Hop and R&B mix. It feels very coffee shop and it’s a vibe.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Coffee shop vibes. It’s a great way to end the mini album. I love the way that everyone feels very balanced on this track. I love the mellowness of the guitar and the electric guitar.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I am usually one to say that EXO’s discography is a no skip and top tier. I’m glad I don’t need to change that rhetoric because when it’s time for EXO to deliver, they do. They see the assignment and deliver every time. This “special” is no exception. It doesn’t matter what combination of members are left, they show what a true craft is. I loved how engrained this album was in that R&B lane EXO likes to frequent without making it stale. Only thing to wait for now is Kyungsoo’s solo and Lay to be released from his shackles.

I think that this album did what it needed to do. It reminded EXOLs that even though there were a lot of scandals, solo projects and military enlistments, EXO is still those boys. It is by no means the best work that they have put out, but also it is better than half your favs best work. I love that this album explored the sounds that I enjoy and consider the backbone of their music. I also loved that Yixing was there! I missed Kyungsoo’s vocals so much, like sir give us the album NOW.
