Lazy Unnie’s Couch: My Tooth Your Love

Jin Xun An, a promising achiever, is already the chief dentist at his dental clinic at a young age. Although cold-hearted and distant by appearance, Jin Xun An has nevertheless earned himself the coveted title of being the “Master Prince of Dentistry”. One day, he is entrusted by Bai Qing, one of his seniors, to treat her precious little brother, Bai Lang. As Bai Lang seats himself in front of Jin Xun An, he looks at the man with a cold and ruthless look. And while a mask covers most of Jin Xuan An’s face, it only helps highlight his deep, electric eyes. Bai Lang then hears his gentle and soothing voice telling him not to be afraid. But almost instantaneously, he finds himself stunned, his heart palpitating and finding a desperate excuse to run away. As it turns out that Bai Lang is not the first dental patient to try to run away from Jin Xun An, but definitely the most troublesome since Jin Xuan An started his career.

Since this seems to be my year of BL dramas, might as well step out of the Thai and Korean box. This was my first Taiwanese BL and I was not disappointed. My expectations were middle of the road. I had seen some really cute gifs from the show but I was worried that this would be a bit on the chaste side. I would give this a nice balance of heat, ridiculousness, and really good storytelling.

The first thing I liked was the fact that these characters didn’t feel flat. Bai Lang at first glance is really annoying and needy but as the show went on, I picked up on the little things that showcased his trauma from losing his parents and feeling that guilt. What surprised me, even more, was that Jin Xun An wasn’t your typical superman type either. He didn’t think he could solve or cure Bai Lang, he suggested being a supportive partner and helping Bai Lang along the way but not thinking he was going to solve everything. It was very realistic and made me love Jin Xun An as a character even more.

Speaking of them, they really carried this show on the back of their chemistry. I know I mention it a lot but when they started falling for each other, you felt that shit. The looks, the skinship, all of it was top-notch. Because it’s a drama, there were the slight moments when you felt they were going to break up or maybe a love triangle but those were just short plot devices. None of that diverted from the fact that these men were gaga for each other. The acting from both Andy and Yu was also really well done. I felt fear in Bai Lang from going to the dentist. I was right there with him.

The place where I would say this show suffered was the pacing and the side couples. The beginning of the show was a little slow. So much that I stopped watching for like 2 weeks. And even though Alex and He Qing Tian were so adorable, I felt like their romance wasn’t given enough screen time for me to care. What was even crazier was the weird flirtation between the hockey player and the second dentist! Their scenes were so spread out, I forgot they had something going on. While Bai Lang and Jin Xun An thrived, everyone else suffered.

In the end, this became a really cute drama sprinkled with some sad moments to keep you on your toes. The medical portions didn’t seem over done and the romance was the type to really give me butterflies. I would love to see these two in something else together. They were a match made in drama heaven.
