Lazy Unnie’s Couch: Black Knight

In 2071, toxic air pollution had devastated the world, leaving only 1% of the population alive. People rarely leave their homes without gas masks, and delivery drivers known as knights protect and deliver packages. One legendary knight, Knight 5-8, meets a young refugee named Sa Wol who dreams of becoming a knight. With the help of Seol A, an officer in the Defense Intelligence Command, Knight 5-8 trains and mentors Sa Wol, helping him achieve his dream in a dangerous and harsh world.

The return of Kim Woo Bin! At least for me because I didn’t watch Our Blues. ANYWAY! I had been waiting for this show since it was announced. However, by the synopsis, you would think this was something it wasn’t. Yes, Kim Woo Bin does take the young Sa Wol under his wing but there are so many other layers to this story. So many that in fact I was confused multiple times throughout the show and had to constantly ask my friend what the hell was happening. The beginning dragged but as usual, once a murder occurred, I was all ears.

What made this show stand out for me was the reminiscence of the Hunger Games dystopia. They weren’t out here killing the poor through some games, but there was a lot of classism. Only who this conglomerate thought was deserving of oxygen was put in the good districts. And there was a whole other subplot of mutants! That is what threw me the most and the fact that it was never really explained left me disappointed. The acting was spot on because Kim Woo Bin as a vigilante that was all about helping the refugees and still doing his day job? Hot. And nothing is complete without competition. The delivery person competition was entertaining, to say the least, but with the looming information about Sa Wol being a mutant of some sort, I felt like it was irresponsible. Again, things just felt vague when it came to parts of the world.

Back to the vagueness of it all, the villain. Song Seun Heon was the villain and all but I really didn’t get his motivations beyond being a dick. Yeah, he was sick, but with what? He thought his dad was becoming weak so there was that, but still no real reason in my opinion. They gave a little backstory on why 5-8 had turned into a vigilante but again, vague. There was something that left me feeling underwhelmed where development was concerned. All in all, it was a good show but was it original? Not so much. I am glad it was short because if there were more of the non-answers going on, I’d be more frustrated. At least I got to appreciate the return of my Woobinee.

Acting: 8/10

Comfort Score: 8/10
Overall: 8/10
