Lazy Unnie’s Playlist: GOT7 – DYE: Mini Album

LABEL: JYP Entertainment

RELEASED: April 20, 2020

Welcome back after 5 months, Kings! When these teasers started coming out I knew I was going to love this concept. It was regal and sexy and I mean, JB said love me in all my long haired glory. Even though the visuals are stunning, it all comes down to the music and since their last EP was a straight bop, I’m expecting nothing less than the same.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I admit, when I first heard this in the teaser, I wasn’t sure how much I was going to like it. And honestly, it still isn’t my favorite as far as title tracks go. However, there are moments I live for. I’m here for all the singing rap surprisingly. Bambam, Jackson and Mark all have distinct vocal tones so it gives the song nice levels. Speaking of Mark, boy came to play with his bars. Youngjae and JB slay the high notes in the way that 2Jae only can. Musically, it’s like Eclipse’s little sister. Now the MV is something totally different. It’s so visually stunning and the choreography is on point. This is a song for the grown and romantic.

Part of me feels like this would have been a good contender for title track. The boom bap beat mixed with the undertone of string instrumentals somehow complements the moments of autotune in the chorus. But don’t get it twisted, vocal line bring it like they always do. I had to add the dance video because come on, blindfolded GOT7? Here for it.

This comes off as a JUS2 side track that didn’t make their album and they said lets add the rest of the guys. Not sure it works as a full 7 song but it’s alright. Nothing spectacular. The verses never really go anywhere but Jackson’s verse gives some hope of growth in the song. But as expected the chorus drops into that R&B EDM realm that producer Defsoul loves. Not terrible but JB has done better.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

It’s a nice groovy R&B balladesque track that I’m surprised to see come from mister Park Jinyoung. Every time I think of a Jinyoung song I think of his track from Eyes On You and I kinda yawn. But this one, I’m liking a lot.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Didn’t expect this island inspired track to come from GOT7! I’m feeling the vibe. Makes me want to pull up and pretend like I can dance. Nice party track without being over the top.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This the daddy AF track. It is almost embarrassing how many times I’ve listened to and watched performance videos of this song. It’s hard to explain how good I think this song is, so I’m just gonna post the video.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

When you think of JB and the kind of music he makes as Defsoul, this is what you think of. Haunting vocals and R&B EDM mixed sounds. I appreciated the rough bass that was thrown in cause it added some color to the short song.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I didn’t think this is the kind of song that would come from Youngjae. It was more sultry than moody. It was sexy and Youngjae’s lower register was also a welcomed bonus. Not an earworm but I could see how this was a nice solo stage for him on tour.

Rating: 2 out of 5.

AmeriThaiKong is one of my favorite lines. Not really for their rapping skills but their personalities. And when they do stages together it comes through. This song feels on brand with all of them. It felt trendy and what you expect. I’m not a huge fan of the autotune of their voices but meh.

I get we’re adding all the Unit and solo pieces from the last tour on the album but… didn’t need the instrumental. No matter how good it was. It was good, that’s all. BUT the actual dance… whew chile. #Blessed

So…. just as I expected, GOT7 delivered. For some reason I end up loving their EPs more than their full albums. I did like the addition of the solo/unit things from the tour for the CD only version (that’s why this review is late, sorry). It was also a godsend to have them promote 3 tracks. Cause without it we wouldn’t have the glorious Poison and Aura stages. Overall I think GOT7 have fully stepped in that grown man era of both their music and concepts and I’m glad to see it. Also with each new release each member shows what they have to offer outside of the group and how when brought together it melds in perfect harmony. Seriously, if JYP keeps treating GOT7 the way they are and not giving them their due, they’re gonna leave and blow everyone out the water.
