First Impressions: No DP’s in this Hometown

I think this year I’m obsessed with Netflix dramas. They are stepping up their game for sure! When I saw two of my drama crushes were going to be staring in some new series, I had to check them out. I’m such a simp for a pretty face and some really good acting ability.

Private soldier Jun Ho is a confused youth who served in the military normally like other Koreans. One day, he suddenly becomes a member of the military defector arrest team. As such, he is tasked with capturing deserters and must grapple with the more troubling cases of why some soldiers feel they have no other choice but go absent without official leave.

  • Starring : Jung Hae In | Koo Kyo Hwan | Kim Sung Kyun | Son Seok Koo

Thoughts: Originally, I thought this was going to be more of a dark comedy. Kind of like if Midnight Runners was set in the military instead of the police academy. However, after episode one, I knew this show was going to have a much deeper impression. Episode two and the introduction of Koo Kyo Hwan’s character does bring in a few laughs but I think the show stands on the shoulders of Jun Hae In and his performance as Private Jun Ho. I really like this kind of darker and more harsher look at Korean men and their mandatory enlistments.

Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha

A love story set in the seaside village of Gongjin.

However, her life plan falls apart because of the tiny bit of righteousness in her heart, and after various obstacles, she moves to the seashore village Gongjin and meets Hong Doo Shik. She becomes curious about him. Hong Doo Shik is called Chief Hong by the local residents. He is officially unemployed, but he is a master of odd jobs who appears to help everyone in Gongjin with any situation they run into.

Thoughts: On paper, this show sounds a bit dull and to be honest, it is. But I say that because in the first 2 episodes, nothing really happened. Shin Min Ah’s character is pretty much set up to be a bit annoying. Yes she’s our lead and we are supposed to feel sympathy toward her because she lost her job and from the looks of it, her mom. But those aren’t excused to be a straight up rude person. As of right now, the saving grace is Kim Seon Ho and his ability to really pull off this good man character. And also the ensemble cast. I live for a kitschy town. I don’t hate it but I can see myself at watching this weekly at least till episode 8.
