Spins On The Turntable: Purple Kiss – Hide & Seek

Purple Kiss – Hide & Seek

Title: Hide & Seek
Artist: Purple Kiss
Label: RBW Entertainment
Release: September 8, 2021

Yes this is weeks late, but like I have a life so idk what y’all want me to say. Make no mistake, this album similar to their debut has been on repeat regardless. We love it. Mamamoo who?

Title Track – Zombie

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

I didn’t know what to expect for their follow up to their debut and needless to say I was not disappointed in the least. First of all, let’s discuss how fun and bright and lovely this MV was! The girls were serving looks and actress! If that wasn’t enough, they were also serving vocals and production. I enjoyed this as a follow up to Ponzona because it showed their versatility. It reflected current KPOP trends with the funky guitar and bass, alongside the catchiness of the hook. I immediately liked it upon first listen even if it wasn’t doing anything new because of how harmonious it all sounded together and Yuki is really getting better with her rap style every release. We shall see how this fares in the race against time.

B-Sides

2am

Rating: 5 out of 5.

If there is one thing you know about me, it’s that I eat up a nice r&b song with strong vocals and a pepper of soul. I love everything about this song. Yuki’s rap on this fits so perfectly. It is simply decadent.

Cast pearls before swine

Rating: 4 out of 5.

When you’re a seasoned KPOP listener, it’s pretty easy to identify the song that most listeners would latch onto and this is that track. It’s a trap inspired upbeat song that has a lot of bells and whistles to it. Personally, I find the most memorable parts to be the pre chorus and yuki’s raps.

So WhY

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is another song that I would say is pretty on trend for what girl groups are offering currently which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. However, I find that Chaerin did a really good with the production and similar to previous track my favorite parts are the pre chorus and rap. The funky elements give it a really good vibe to chill to.

Twinkle

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

This one has probably been the one that has grown on me the most over the past weeks. I don’t typically enjoy the type of synth electropop music but tell me you can’t just picture this playing on the Top 40 radio back in like 2015? The nostalgia factor on this really upped it for me.

ZzZz

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I am such a simple bitch its bad. Like give me vocals and a subdued beat and I will eat that shit like groceries. I love the way they did a small switch up for the rap but over all the simplicity of this is what I enjoy the most. A perfect way to end the album.

Final Thoughts

I love this as a follow up EP so much because it made me so excited for what else this group as to offer! The reason why I didn’t give them much for concept and cohesiveness is just because I don’t think they were going for a set theme with this one as opposed to their debut and it was more so something fun for them to squeeze in right before summer ends. I won’t lie yall, when SWAN releases that solo, I will be seated in the first row. I can’t get enough of her voice.

Concept: 3.75/5
Vocals: 5/5
Raps: 5/5
Cohesiveness: 4/5
Overall Rating: 4/5
