First Impressions: Cheer Up

Can their uniforms be a little more… Cheerful?

Cheer Up

The bright and diligent Do Hae Yi is a student at Yeonhee University. Because of her family’s poor financial situation, she places a priority on making money rather than school. One day, Do Hae Yi suddenly joins cheering squad Teyia that has existed for 50 years at Yeonhee University. She only joins the club for money, but while participating in the cheering squad, Do Hae Yi starts experiencing the joy of campus life and meets various people from Teyia including Bae Young Woong, who was once a member of Teyia and he is an alumnus of Yeonhee Univers, supporting the cheering squad financially and emotionally.

Thoughts: I don’t hate this. But I also don’t love it. Something about it feels like it shouldn’t be an hour show. Maybe it is the setting and the obvious setup of the love triangle in the first episode or maybe it is the mysterious curse that is on the cheer team that feels so left-field that I can’t take it seriously. What I do like is our lead is really a poor girl. I like how she is basically working her way through school and doing what she has to do and sometimes that doesn’t agree with the love lines in her life, but money is money and it needs to be made. I respect that. I probably won’t be weekly with this one like I planned but it might be a decent binge.
