Lazy Unnie’s Couch: We Best Love 1 & 2

It is not a simple thing to like someone, because… many times, we dare not say anything! “If first place is the only way to make you see me, then I will never lose to you before you fall in love with me.” Zhou Shu Yi stared at the class report and saw Gao Shi De’s name above him again. He didn’t understand. He had always ranked second ever since Gao Shi De came into his life. For this reason, he was excited to go to college and parted ways. He hoped to never see Gao Shi De again. In college, he joined the swimming club and was revered by everyone. He was happily enjoying college life until Gao Shi De suddenly appeared at the swimming competition during their senior year. This made him wonder why Gao Shi De always followed him wherever he went. But little did he know that Gao Shi De had eyes for him and would never let him go.

This is the first time I’m doing a double review in one but both series were so short and the stories felt like two halves of a whole. After binging My Tooth Your Love, I needed to see what Taiwan had going for itself in the BL department. I was not disappointed when I came across this little gem. It’s a classic story of rivals but not truly because one is in love with the other. Shu Yi hates that he is always second to Shi De. However, Shi De is just doing him and secretly falling deeper in love with Shu Yi. I would have given up because Shu Yi was a big-ass dick for no damn reason outside of jealousy. But I give it to Shi De because once he knew he was all about Shu Yi, he made sure to change his mind. But the best part was watching the ice walls melt after Shi De blackmailed Shu Yi into being his friend. The chemistry between the lead actors really sold the story.

What I really loved about this was because it was so short, a lot of the filler will they or won’t they didn’t exist. The first season was almost perfect with the story of secret love succeeding. I even liked the fact that in the beginning, Shu Yi was in love with one of his best friends. But when he started to get closer to Shi De, he couldn’t care about her in that way anymore. I think what I loved the most was that once Shu Yi decided that he was in love with Shi De, he didn’t flip-flop back and forth. He was so sure to the point he was screaming it to the world.

But because this is dramaland, the end is basically Shi De leaving Shu Yi to go to America with his mom. We can assume they had a cute long-distance relationship until they were reunited. SIKE! Season two basically tells us that love is dead and you can’t trust men. Or parents. We flash forward 5 years in the future, Shi De is back in Taiwan and is a CEO of a company, and of course, it is being taken over by no other than Shu Yi and his daddy’s company. They are broken up and it is angsty as fuck. The beginning was kind of throwing us back to the point in season one where Shu Yi was like fuck this dude but now it’s because his heart is broken. Shi De is still in love but he got secrets.

Season two basically gave us all the angst that was missing from season one but it felt flat because it was so predictable. Of course, Shu Yi’s dad is not on board with the gay agenda and does the classic stay away from my child thing. And Shi De being the gullible cutie he is, complies. The first half was really annoying because Shi De was basically trying to get Shu Yi back but it didn’t come across as endearing as he was in season one. With the time jump, you would have thought the characters had done a little growth, but it just felt like they were still college kids but now in suits.

I would talk about the side couples but honestly, they weren’t developed enough for me to even give them time. I would have loved more of both the Bing Wei and Zhe Yu relationship since in season one they were both in love with Shu Yi and Shi De but in season two, their relationship was hella ambiguous until the very very end. Let’s have a season 3 where they get their due.
