Lazy Unnie’s Couch: Between Us

Team is a talented swimmer who just entered university. However, when it comes to swim competitions, he’s never able to perform to the best of his abilities. When swim team upperclassman Win comes to know that the problem doesn’t lie in Team’s abilities or dedication, but rather his trauma and the sleeping difficulties it causes, he offers up his own room for Team to stay in. With the comfort of company, Team’s performance starts to improve and feelings start to grow between the two young men. But Team isn’t the only one with issues from his past preventing him from moving forward. Win struggles with how to handle receiving love and how to give special treatment to those closest to him. Occurring parallel to the events of “Until We Meet Again,” this story focuses on how Win and Team come to know and inspire growth in each other.

First, let me preface this by saying I never finished Until We Meet Again. I’ll probably finish it at some point this year but I have a thing against characters who just cry or look like they are going to cry all the time. With that said, I knew going in this was going to be a parallel story of the side couple, Win and Team from that show. There are things I really enjoyed about it running in the same time frame as the origin show but others were a bit annoying. Honestly, that was my whole vibe throughout watching. My expectations were pretty high and maybe that was my fault because I know I should go in without any, so maybe it’s my own fault and not the show’s why after twelve weeks of edging, I was left without a real pay off.

Since Win and Team were a fan favorite from UWMA, I was expecting their story to be this different, fun but also angsty plot. What I think happened was because UWMA had this overall huge plot of reincarnated souls from past lives falling in love, BU fell in comparison because it had this trauma plot which is fine… but just felt underdeveloped. Team had this trauma of watching his cousin die, and Win had… something that I never really understood. Was he scared of commitment? Sure, okay. It felt like the writers were trying to build something that could match the intensity of the first show but also appease the fans.

Speaking of, the fanservice! Before the show even aired, there were these short little clips between the couple and they were so cute! I was hoping for more of that dynamic but instead, we got weeks of Win and Team, hooking up, not really communicating with each other, and playing this weird hard-to-get. When I said it felt like they were edging fans, I was serious. Not all shows need to be like KinnPorsche of Love in the Air, but for a couple who the fans LOVE, I would have liked to see them be… you know, a couple. Cuddles at night ain’t gonna cut it.

As for the things I liked. Just like everyone else, I loved the consent dialogue between everyone really. We don’t see it often and Win basically asking Team if he can wreck him? Sexy. I also liked how we got to see some of the side couples have a pretty decent storyline. This makes me think, this universe is great at giving the second and third couples amazing things but sucks at main couples. Bee and Prince’s story of a young actor falling in love was so cute. But I LIVED for Win’s best friend and brother being gamer friends and then boyfriends. THIS IS WHERE THE POTENTIAL IS AT.

I could go on and on about things but I won’t because then I would be as bad as the writers. I love Boun and Prem just like everyone else. I love their chemistry but because of the knee-jerky writing and direction of Between Us, none of that came across the screen clearly. It felt like they were trying to appease the fans with a bunch of fanservice and a weak ass plot. I think this would have been better if they would have done it as an AU in which they didn’t have to follow the confines of Until We Meet Again. GIVE THE BOYS WELL-WRITTEN SCRIPTS!
