Spins On The Turntable: Dreamcatcher – Apocalypse: Save Us

Dreamcatcher – Apocalypse: Save Us

Title: Apocalypse: Save Us
Artist: Dreamcatcher
Label: Dreamcatcher Company
Release: April 12, 2022

I feel like I had to give this one a review because like how else can I be blatantly biased? We got a solo song from each member! I may not talk about Dreamcatcher often, but they are still a top tier group. I am so proud of their growth. Just a refresher, biases are SuA and Siyeon. Okay? Okay.

Title Track – Maison

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Okay so confession time, I wasn’t too too impressed with many title tracks post Scream and so I was a bit nervous when I saw the teasers for this one. However, I love when I get to eat my words because they definitely shut me up. It was so reminiscent of their old style that I like immediately enjoyed this. Music video wise, it’s a no for me dawg. Everything else though? On point. I love the simplicity of the chorus and this might be one of my favorite Dami rap verses in their entire discography. I am also obsessed with the post bridge chorus. It is a serve and Korea agrees! WE GOT OUR FIRST WIN.

B-Sides

Intro: Save Us

Rating: 2 out of 5.

This might be one of the worst intros they’ve ever had. I literally cannot remember anything about it.

Locked Inside A Door

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I liked this almost immediately. I am a huge sucker for a kind of funk/swing infused style on a guitar. The vocals and rap is so complimentary. The percussions on the chorus just fits the whole vibe that you’re supposed to experience here and I am all for it.

Starlight

Rating: 5 out of 5.

EXCELLENCE. PERFECTION. YOU ABSOLUTELY GET IT THE FIRST TIME. One thing I can always count on them to do is give me something to love. Synth pop is a trend I don’t tire of. If every girl group wants to go that route I will gladly accept it.

Together

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Electropop esque in nature. Perfect for a festival and dancing. I can already picture this one at the concert just pumping up the crowd. It’s fun and cute. I don’t know if it is necessarily something that sticks, but in the moment you get what you get.

Always

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Naturally no kpop album is complete without a slower, more subdued song. This is very boring and that is okay. We can’t always win yanno. The vocals sound really good though!

Skit: The seven doors

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Just a break before we dive into the solos.

Cherry (Real Miracle)

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Yes Miss JiU. This slay. It’s the second best Kpop song I have heard that’s titled Cherry. Like I said before, so much of this speaks to me on a personal level. A huge sucker for a funk string.

No Dot

Rating: 5 out of 5.

NO CRUMBS LEFT BEHIND. I can’t explain it, but this is exactly what I thought a SuA solo song would sound like. She is a server and we had to stan. Like, it’s not even biasism at this point, it’s just facts. At first I was iffy about the edm hip hop beats, but yknow it gets you moving. So yeah, sorry to y’all, she won. You see the choreo? Yeah that’s an ace.

Entracing

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This reminds me of Chinese drama OST so much and I find that so beautiful. We already bared witness to a Siyeon solo, so I was curious to see how else she would present herself and I wasn’t disappointed at all. It just sounds so beautiful and traditional.

Winter

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

Well. Do y’all see how pretty Handongie looks with red hair? OHMYGOD. Um so this song, is very boring and average. Not much going for it unfortunately.

For

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This is another one that was slightly mid as well which was disappointing because I had expected something a bit different from her. That being said, I enjoyed it more than Handong because it gave me dreamy vibes.

Beauty Full

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

By far the one that shocked me the most. Idk if I am so out of touch with the fandom, but this was a surprise. I really didn’t think that this was the way Dami was gonna go but oh wow do I love this. She buss down! A love an unapologetic pop rock sound. Transforming me to the early 2000s. More please.

Playground

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Cute. Unfortunately, Cherry is the same vibe and it is better. Still, I like the trumpet and piano at the beginning of the second verse. Sadly, not very memorable overall.

Final Thoughts

I genuinely enjoyed this in its entirety especially in comparison to the two that came before it. I will admit that Sleep-walking has yet to be dethroned, but she is just THAT GIRL. I had fun with this and I can tell the girls did as well. The album as a whole was more pop influenced which isn’t a bad thing. I like the growth. Vocals were great, raps were great. I couldn’t give much for cohesiveness because that wasn’t the idea behind this album. I like the taste of solos because it makes me think about how a solo project would go. Now we need duets. (Suayeon, I’m talking to you.)

Concept: 4/5
Vocals: 5/5
Raps: 5/5
Cohesiveness: 3/5
Overall Rating: 4/5
