You know.. I told you guys I was going to finish this drama this month and I sure did. Bow down to my excellency. Wow it seems like I’ve just been living in Chinese dramaland huh? In my defense, I wanna state that Lazy Unnie gives you the BLs and I give you the cdramas! It’s what works! Plus, I am having a hard time staying engaged with kdramas lately. I don’t know what the problem is…
Moving on… Guys, I am actually a bit sad. I will be transparent and state that when I started this drama I was properly obsessed! It was giving what a girl like me absolutely loves which is a bit of an arranged marriage/turned into like a contract thing where it was like “I help you then you let me go” and I could dig it. The jokes were there, the chemistry was there. It was working for me. And damn did Bai Jing Ting look like the hottest man in his historical garb. However, somewhere along the line, I started feeling a drag. I realized I wasn’t getting as much romance out of the main couple as I wanted. I was feeling a bit unsatisfied even as I enjoyed the whole feminist aspect that we had going here. I loved when all the women were hanging with and around each other, but when I started realizing that I was skipping through all the brother court politics scene was when I knew that they lost me. That isn’t to say that this was bad and I can see why everyone loves it. It’s just that I kinda expected more romance and felt like it was kinda a waste of the chemistry between our leads that we didn’t get more.
Acting wise though.. Everyone came on set and went to WORK. I love that for me. I love a story that is well acted because it amplifies what can be a mediocre story. Not that I think this is a mediocre story, but I can tell you that if it wasn’t for the way this cast delivered their roles, I would’ve absolutely dropped this drama. This was the first thing I have ever seen Tian Xi Wei in and it made me want to go back through her catalog and see what else she can do. You already know I am Bai Jing Ting’s whore at this point because the way that man just seamlessly flows between all his roles, literally none of his characters are the same to me. I love that.
Overall, this drama’s hype is definitely earned and I can see why it has such an high rating. However, for myself, I can’t rate this any higher because it was forty episodes! FORTY! If this drama was even ten episodes less it would’ve gotten a higher score, but riddle me this, how do you have a forty episode historical comedy ROMANCE and the couple is barely coupling more than their counterparts? It’s a no for me dawg.
